  Size Guide – Gis

Are you starting karate or judo but not sure what size gi to choose ? Don’t ...

 ](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/guides/size-guide-gis "Size Guide – Gis")

Aikido is a martial art created in the 1920s by **Morihei Ueshiba**, a Japanese master. He founded this art on the principles of non-violence, drawing inspiration from the combat arts of ancient Japan.

Literally, Aikido can be broken down into three parts: Ai, which means union or harmony depending on the translation; Ki, representing vital energy; and Do, which refers to the path the practitioner must follow. It is therefore the journey, the **path to follow in order to harmonize or unite one’s vital energies**.

This martial art crossed borders and appeared in France later, in the 1950s, thanks to **Master Minoru Mochizuki**, one of Master Ueshiba’s students.

In reality, **the term “Aikido kimono” is incorrect**. The proper term is “aikidogi” or “keikogi.” The kimono is a traditional Japanese garment, not intended for martial arts practice. This term has been misused for years, to the point that it is now difficult to correct the misconception.

### How do you wear the keikogi?

The traditional aikido uniform consists of an aikido gi (even though the term is incorrect), also called keikogi or aikidogi. It is made up of a **white jacket** with reinforced shoulders and **white pants**, often reinforced at the knees or double-layered.

The aikido uniform also includes **an obi**, the belt used to keep the jacket closed and to secure the Hakama. The Hakama is also part of the aikido uniform.

The jacket is worn with the left side over the right. Ideally, the sleeves should not extend beyond the middle of the forearm. The pants should fall a few centimeters above the ankle so they are not visible under the Hakama.

### **What weight should I choose for my AIKIDOGI?**

There are **three types of keikogi**: lightweight, classic, and so-called “heavyweight” models. For your information, **lightweight models** are most commonly used in Japan during the summer, as temperatures and humidity can rise quickly. As you can imagine, lightweight and ultra-lightweight aikidogi are **very useful in summer** when the heat becomes stifling. Thanks to the lighter fabric, these models are cooler, absorb moisture faster, and dry much more quickly.

If you tend to suffer from the heat, this is the ideal “aikido gi” for you! However, these models are **more fragile** than classic or heavyweight aikidogi. That’s the trade-off.

**Classic models** are very similar to judo gi, as they feature rice grain weave and another section in diamond weave. These models are between lightweight and heavyweight, suitable for anyone, but are especially recommended if you are **starting aikido**. In fact, this is the most popular model in the art’s country of origin, as it is **worn by the vast majority of practitioners**.

Finally, **midweight, heavyweight, and super-heavyweight models** are mainly for **advanced practitioners**, competitors, and instructors. They have a **seam down the back** that can be uncomfortable when falling, so they are not recommended for beginners. Like classic keikogi, they feature a rice grain weave and a double layer of diamond weave, making them much heavier.

### Which keikogi cut should you choose?

There are two types of aikidogi: classic cuts and new cuts. **Classic models** have a wide cut, fairly long sleeves, and a rather short jacket. This model is inspired by judo uniforms and is not really suited for aikido practitioners. However, it is a cut that is perfectly suitable for practitioners who are **slightly above their ideal weight**.

**New cuts** have shorter sleeves and a longer jacket. This model offers **better freedom of movement** and **falls straighter**, which avoids the need for a back seam that can be uncomfortable during falls, especially with heavier models. New cuts are therefore better suited for **lighter practitioners**.

A quick tip regarding **aikido pants**: make sure the knees and, more generally, the entire pants are **well reinforced**, otherwise you may have to replace them after just a few uses.
