From first-time initiations to competitive matches, find the gear that matches your level and goals to develop your speed, reflexes, and precision. **Perfect your technique and make the most of your training sessions with our selection of Chanbara equipment for kids and adults, beginners and advanced practitioners alike.** Chanbara (スポーツチャンバラ), also known as “**Spochan**,” is the direct descendant of **sword fighting as practiced by the samurai**. In fact, the word “chanbara” is a Japanese onomatopoeia that refers to the **sound of swords clashing** during combat. ### The History of Chanbara Chanbara was developed in 1971 by Tanabe Tetsundo and a group of Japanese fencers. It is based on **goshinjyutu**: **the art of self-defense**. This new discipline quickly appealed to teenagers and anyone old enough to practice martial arts. Recognized by the Ministry of Education, **it is even practiced in schools**. Thanks to its popularity, Chanbara has spread internationally: in Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, Russia, New Caledonia, and Central Europe; in other words, **almost worldwide**. There are about **300,000 practitioners in Japan** and **1,400 licensed practitioners in France** (as of 2015), but many judoka also practice Chanbara alongside their main discipline. ### Weapons Used in Chanbara Chanbara is minimally codified and allows for **great freedom in practice**, both in combat methods and in the weapons used. In fact, **you can use several different weapons when practicing Chanbara**: - [Kodachi](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/kodachi-chanbara), - [Choken](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/choken-chanbara), - [Yari](https://www.budo-fight.com/fr/catalogue/equipements/armes/armes-en-mousse-caoutchouc), - [Tanto](https://www.budo-fight.com/fr/catalogue/equipements/armes/tanto), - Bou, - Tate, - Jhou, - Naginata… Each of these weapons can be used **in its classic version or in an inflatable version** for beginners and training sessions. ### Chanbara Equipment Chanbara has its own specific gear. Here are its components: - a **sleeveless keikogi**, - a **long-sleeve t-shirt** (worn under the keikogi), - **gloves** or **kote**, - [headgear](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/chanbara-competition-headgear). ### Chanbara Kata Despite the freedom of expression in Chanbara, **it includes many kata** (sequences of techniques similar to choreographies). The two kata partners are called: - *uchitachi*, for the attacker; - *shitachi*, for the one who completes the action. The purpose of kata is to **improve each fighter’s technique** and to **progress through the ranks**. ### The Principle of Chanbara Like in kendo, the motto of Chanbara is *ki ken tai no itchi* (気剣体の一致), which means “*spirit, sword, and body as one*.” It emphasizes the unity of the three elements of the fighter: - **Energy** (*ki*), which refers to **the fighter’s willpower**. This is expressed through the *kiai*, the shout made with each attack and movement, mainly during kata. - **The sword** (*ken*), symbolizing **the strike delivered to the opponent**. - **The body** (*tai*), which **refers to the movements performed by the fighter**. It is **symbolized by a stomp on the ground** at the moment of attack and kiai.
