The philosophical approach of taekwondo is based on **5 principles** to which taekwondo students must pledge: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and "indomitable spirit". Physically, it develops flexibility, endurance, and strength. An Olympic discipline since 2000, taekwondo stands out from other martial arts because **it is the only one to allow kicks and to require extensive protective gear** in combat competitions: the Taekwondo chest guard (the Ho GOO), as well as other protections such as headgear, gloves, mouthguards, forearm guards, shin guards, foot guards, and groin guards. It is a **contact sport** and above all a **self-defense discipline**; the goal is not to injure your opponent, and every measure is taken to ensure maximum protection for fighters. ### What is the dobok? Taekwondo practitioners **train and compete in a dojang wearing a Taekwondo dobok**. The dobok ("clothing of the way") is the training uniform for the taekwondo practitioner's "body and mind". Inspired by traditional Korean attire, it consists of **three elements, each representing a symbol**: the circle (wong), the square (bang), and the triangle (kak). - The jacket represents the circle, symbolizing the sky - The pants represent the square, symbolizing the earth - The belt represents the triangle, symbolizing man According to Korean culture, these three elements are the foundation of the universe. They come together to form a unity called "Han", symbolized by the color white. That’s why the Taekwondo dobok must be **respected, kept clean, and ironed**. The sleeveless-style jacket is **completely closed with a V-neck** and is put on over the head. **The collar comes in two colors**: white for white to red belts, and black for black belts. **[The Taekwondo dobok](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/catalog/other-disciplines/taekwondo)** should feel weightless on the fighter’s back and **should not restrict speed or flexibility** of movement. Since it is not subject to mechanical constraints like grabbing (as in judo, for example), the fabric is thinner and therefore **lighter, more breathable, and easier to care for** (washing, drying, ironing). The pants are **looser and lighter** to allow for various complex kicking techniques without restriction. They are **held up by a belt** that will be a different color depending on the practitioner’s level.
