Découvrir → budo-fight.com Published on **June 20, 2024** # Which boxing gloves should you choose for competition? The long-awaited moment of competition has finally arrived—the one you’ve been preparing for through countless hours of punching bag training and sparring. To make sure you’re fully equipped, follow this guide! There are **two main types of boxing gloves designed for competition**: **amateur competition gloves** and **pro boxing gloves**. Depending on whether you’re an amateur or a professional boxer, the gloves you’ll use in competition will differ. ## Amateur Competition Gloves **Amateur competition gloves** are **softer and lighter** than training gloves: they allow the boxer to **feel their movements** while also **protecting their opponent**. These gloves are subject to strict regulations to ensure that the padding and its density meet the standards of the sport and to guarantee the integrity of the discipline. ## Pro Boxing Gloves ![Compétition de boxe](https://www.budo-fight.com/upload/images/2024/gants-boxe-competition2.jpg) **Pro boxing gloves** are the smallest in the entire boxing glove family. These gloves have **less padding** than amateur competition gloves. They are designed to **deliver more powerful punches** from the boxer to their opponent, even if that means less protection for the knuckles. Professional boxers are considered to have better control over their punches and are thus able to land accurate strikes. Some models of pro boxing gloves are **padded with horsehair**: this type of padding breaks down easily during the fight, allowing opponents to face each other with reduced padding as the bout progresses. However, whether they’re padded with horsehair or polyurethane foam, pro boxing gloves are subject to **strict regulations** to ensure that all athletes use certified equipment. ## How to Choose the Right Competition Boxing Gloves ![Compétition de boxe](https://www.budo-fight.com/upload/images/2024/gants-boxe-competition.jpg)Budo-Fight offers you 6 basic rules to help you choose your competition boxing gloves: - **Beginner competitors** should choose boxing gloves with **plenty of padding** to avoid injuring themselves or their partner. - **More experienced competitors**, who have better control over the accuracy and power of their punches, can select **lighter gloves with less padding**. - The **lightness of the gloves** is a key factor: the lighter the gloves, the faster you can throw punches. - **Heavier boxers** who rely on powerful punches should go for **thicker gloves** (14–16 oz) to maximize impact. - **More agile boxers** who focus less on raw power should opt for **lightweight gloves** (under 12 oz), which allow for quick, repeated strikes targeting specific areas. Use your competition gloves only for… competition! There are specific gloves designed **for mixed training**, **[for the punching bag](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/guides/which-boxing-gloves-should-you-choose-for-punching-bag-training)** and [for sparring](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/guides/which-boxing-gloves-should-you-choose-for-sparring), which will help you make them last longer and optimize your performance in every area.
