This Japanese martial art counts thousands of members in France. If you’re not familiar with this sport, a **quick overview** is in order before you look for the nearest judo club. What are the benefits of judo? Which **judo gi for kids** should you choose? **Budo-Fight** explains it all! ## Baby Judo for the Little Ones ![Baby judo ](https://www.budo-fight.com/upload/images/baby-judo.jpg)Also known as **judo awakening**, this sports activity for children is becoming increasingly popular. Contrary to some beliefs, starting judo is not dangerous. In fact, children can be enrolled **from the age of 3**. Judo classes themselves are reserved for children aged 5 and up. During baby judo classes, children **develop their motor skills**, first alone, then with a partner. They learn how to fall on the tatami without getting hurt, thanks to breakfall techniques and little tricks they’ll use in everyday life! Without necessarily naming the specific moves, the instructor mainly teaches **the basics of judo** during these sessions. ## The Benefits of Judo for Children What parent hasn’t searched for **the perfect extracurricular activity** for their child? Blowing off steam after school, developing a new passion, making friends with other students… The benefits of sports are too numerous to list. Budo-Fight, combat sports expert since 1963, presents **the key advantages of judo**. ### Judo: A Great Way to Blow Off Steam… Even though a judo match only lasts a few minutes, that doesn’t mean it isn’t intense! Before judo competitions, young judokas spend plenty of time **mastering different techniques** according to their belt. Practicing judo **engages the whole body**: it’s the perfect physical activity if your child **needs to burn off energy** once or several times a week. ### … All While Being Supervised ![Quelques règles simples du judo](https://www.budo-fight.com/upload/images/regles-judo.jpg)Judo is also a **school of life** for young people. A healthy body in a healthy mind! Here are **a few very simple judo rules** that young judokas learn to follow: - Bow to your opponent before and after the match - Obey the referee’s gestures - No striking, or you’ll be penalized - Stay within the area marked by the tatami ### Judo: Building Kids’ Mental Strength It’s well known: sports aren’t just about physical ability. Children also, and above all, learn to **push their mental limits**. Judo is no exception: by managing adrenaline and competition stress, young judokas **gain confidence**. Unlike team sports, a judoka must learn to win, but also to lose alone: a chance to reflect on their progress and **learn from their mistakes**. ## Judo Gi for Kids: All the Essential Gear Good news for parents: the equipment for this combat sport remains **affordable**. To start judo, your child will need just a few essentials. Which **[gi for kids](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/catalog/judo/judo-gi)** should you choose? How do you care for a judo uniform? Budo-Fight reviews the **must-have accessories** for young judokas. ### Choosing the Right Judo Gi for Kids Want to **invest in a kids’ judo gi**? Also called a **judogi**, it’s the essential item for stepping onto the tatami. ![Bien choisir un kimono de judo pour enfant](https://www.budo-fight.com/upload/images/kimono-judo-enfant.jpg)If it’s their **very first gi** or they’re quite young, your child will need a lightweight gi fabric with a **soft weight**. This will help them move freely and get used to wearing the judogi as the sessions go by. We recommend our [kids’ judo gi for beginners](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/kids-beginner-judo-gi): with a weight of 210 g/m², it’s both comfortable and very affordable. This model of kids’ judo gi includes a reinforced jacket and **elastic waist pants** to make things easier for little ones. However, as they grow, drawstring pants become essential. If your child is **at least 10 years old** or wants to start **judo competitions**, their judogi should be **thicker** to better withstand their opponent’s grips. That’s the case with [our kids’ training judo gi](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/judo-gi-training). With a weight of 480 g/m², it’s also **reinforced at the knees**. ### Choosing the Right Size Judo Gi for Your Child Judo pants should reach the ankles. We recommend choosing a **slightly larger model** (5 cm), as judogis can shrink in the wash. At Budo-Fight, kids’ judo gi are available **from 90 cm to 200 cm**: for more info, check out our **[judo gi size guide](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/guides/size-guide-gis)**! ### How to Care for a Kids’ Judo Gi? To take care of your child’s gi, follow these **simple tips**: - For the first 3 washes, wash the kids’ gi **in cold water**. - After each judo session, machine wash the gi at a normal cycle **at 30°C**. - Let your child’s gi **air dry** (the dryer will definitely shrink the fabric). - You can absolutely **iron a kids’ judogi**: its 100% cotton composition handles heat very well. ### The Rest of the Equipment If the words *zooris* or *obi* are still new to you, now’s the time to learn more about the gear needed for judo! #### Judo Belts for Kids Have you picked out your child’s future judogi? All that’s left is to get a judo belt, also known as an **[obi](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/catalog/judo/judo-belts)**.
