If you’re not very familiar with the options, it can be tough to **choose between a [punching ball](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/leisure-punching-ball) or a [punching bag](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/budofight-pro-punching-bag-end-of-line)**. Don’t worry: Budo-Fight, your **combat sports specialist**, is here to **help you pick the best model** and explain the differences between the two! ## What is a punching bag? ![Sac de frappe](https://www.budo-fight.com/upload/images/2021/sac-de-frappe2.jpg)A punching bag is, as the name suggests, a bag that boxers strike to train. It’s often filled with **scraps of fabric** and **a bit of sand** to provide good stability. Its outer shell is generally made [of](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/metal-boxe-indiana-punching-bag-delivered-empty)**[synthetic leather](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/metal-boxe-indiana-punching-bag-delivered-empty) or [natural leather](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/montana-skin-100-leather-punching-bag-end-of-line)**. With a punching bag, boxers can **train their speed and power**, **regulate their heart rate**, and even **build muscle**. It’s a versatile accessory that’s essential in many sports! Even tennis players and professional shooters occasionally use it to develop strength. A punching bag has a **cylindrical shape** that lets you work with both your hands and feet. It’s useful for **many exercises**, but be careful **not to get too used to it**! A punching bag stays still and requires power, unlike a real opponent who will move and hit back. So, what are the differences? First, the punching ball usually has a **much rounder shape** than its competitor and looks like a small ball (hence the name “ball”). But be careful not to confuse it with the speed ball or strike ball, two other very different accessories! Don’t worry, it’s not so hard to tell them apart. Unlike the bag, which is attached to the ceiling, the punching ball is [mounted on a metal rod](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/pro-punching-ball) equipped with a spring that brings it back to the center after each hit. Some models can be attached **to a stand or to the ceiling**, but these are rather hard to find. Do you need a punching ball or a punching bag? **It all depends on your level, your goals, and your habits**. Here’s what you need to know! ### The punching bag for Muay Thai or kickboxing The advantage of the punching bag is its length. Even though this can vary, a striking accessory like this lets you **strike with both your hands and your feet**. If you practice Muay Thai, kickboxing, or any form of **kickboxing**, it’s ideal for working on all your strikes at once! On the other hand, if you’re a fan of [**full contact**](https://www.lecercle-boxing.com/full-contact-boxe-americaine/), [a punching ball securely fixed to the floor](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/punching-ball-bobby-bully-century) will do the trick, since kicks below the belt aren’t allowed. For [**English boxing**](https://www.s-combats.com/boxe-anglaise/): same story, since kicks are forbidden. ### The punching bag for working on power rather than precision ![Sac de frappe](https://www.budo-fight.com/upload/images/2021/sac-de-frappe3.jpg)A punching bag, thanks to its weight—often much heavier than a punching ball—lets you **work on the power** of your strikes. Yes, it takes real strength to make it move! This accessory will also help you **improve your explosiveness, cardio, and the fluidity** of your combinations. **Watch out for injuries**! Training on a punching bag, if not done properly, can cause a number of minor or even serious injuries. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to how it’s filled and to use **[bag gloves](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/catalog/boxing/striking-equipment/punching-bag-gloves)** to avoid **metacarpal or scaphoid fractures**. ### The punching ball for apartments or small spaces A punching bag is heavy and takes up space. You need to have **enough ceiling height** to train in good conditions. If you live in **an apartment** or **a small house**, a punching ball can save you a lot of space. The punching ball is also **lighter**: if you’re unsure about the strength of your ceiling, it’s the perfect choice! No risk of damaging it. Your landlord probably won’t be thrilled if you make a huge hole in the ceiling… Otherwise, you can always [hang it on a bracket](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/pro-punching-bag-wall-mount-60cm-40-kg-max)! ### The alternative: aqua bag or striking dummy ![Bob mannequin de frappe](https://www.budo-fight.com/upload/images/2021/bobby.jpg)Can’t decide between a punching ball or a punching bag? Budo-Fight has found a solution for you: [the aqua bag](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/catalog/boxing/punching-bags)! Filled with water, this accessory is halfway between a punching ball and a punching bag. It’s generally **more durable** and **better for your joints**. Otherwise, you can always go for a [striking dummy](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/bob-century-striking-dummy)! Often pricier than a punching ball or punching bag, it can still help you progress at lightning speed. It has a **human shape** and **motivates the boxer** to imagine facing a real opponent. So, have you made your decision? Punching ball or punching bag?
