From your first training sessions on the tatami to perfecting techniques of throwing, immobilization, and working with traditional weapons, find equipment suited to your level and goals. **Advance your aikido practice with our selection of gear and accessories for all levels.** Aikido is a unique martial art as it is solely focused on **self-defense** with techniques designed to preserve the physical integrity of the opponent. The principle of **non-violence** prevails both on and off the tatami. ### The Origin of Aikido Aikido is a **Japanese martial art** with the aim not to defeat the opponent, but to **discourage** them. This discipline, which unites body and mind, was created by **Morihei Ueshiba**. He drew inspiration from ancient combat arts and, above all, from philosophical elements of **non-violence**. Practicing aikido requires both physical and mental commitment. It is a perfect blend of **physical techniques**, **spirituality**, and **moral values**. The goal is never to harm the opponent, but to redirect their energy to **defuse** the conflict. This combat sport, very innovative for its time, has no form of competition. Aikidoka learn to move at the right moment and in the most appropriate way for the situation. ### The Aikido Uniform The aikido uniform consists of several simple yet essential elements for proper practice of this discipline. #### The keikogi The aikido gi, or **[keikogi](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/catalog/other-disciplines/aikido/aikido-gi)** (literally “training garment”), includes a closed jacket and pants made of **100% white cotton fabric**. The cotton is “heavy” for a good grip, reducing the risk of tearing. It is very similar to a judo gi, except the sleeves are shorter to make wrist grabs easier. #### The hakama When the instructor considers students to have reached a **sufficient** level, they are allowed to wear the [hakama](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/catalog/other-disciplines/aikido/hakama). A legacy of the **samurai**, the hakama is a wide pair of pants with 5 pleats in the front and 2 in the back, representing the **7 symbolic virtues of budo**: - Gi: honor and justice. - Rei: courtesy and etiquette. - Chi: wisdom and intelligence. - Shin: sincerity. - Chu: loyalty. - Koh: piety. - Jin: benevolence and generosity. Wearing the hakama allows practitioners to fully immerse themselves in this martial art, adopting the **traditional aikido attire**. This garment is an important symbol and should be high quality to allow **fluid movement**. It also features a rigid **back plate** called the **koshi ita**, which sits at the small of the back. The traditional hakama is plain, black, and sometimes indigo blue. #### The obi The aikido belt, called an **obi**, keeps the jacket in place. For kyu grades, which are for beginners and intermediates, a **white belt** is worn. Unlike judo or karate, there are no colored belts to indicate level in aikido. When practitioners reach a certain mastery and earn the **1st dan** grade, they are allowed to wear a **black belt**. #### The zooris Aikido is practiced **barefoot**. However, to access the tatami, it is required to wear **zooris**. These are small sandals with a sole made of **rice straw** or **rush** and straps usually made of **velvet**. You can choose them with [Y-shaped straps](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/zooris-rice-straw-y) or **[X-shaped straps](https://www.budo-fight.com/en/product/rice-straw-zooris-x)**! When practitioners step onto the tatami, they place their zooris **perpendicular** to it, **toes pointing outward**. ### Ranks in Aikido Ranks were not established at the same time as aikido, as practicing a martial art was a necessity at the time and everyone had more or less the same level. Once again, it was **Jigoro Kano**, the founder of **judo**, who introduced the concept of ranks between the 19th and 20th centuries. There are two types of ranks in aikido: “**kyu**,” lower ranks represented by a white belt, and “**dan**,” higher ranks represented by a black belt. These ranks help practitioners know where they stand in their **learning** of aikido and within the **hierarchy** of their club. #### Kyu Ranks There are **7 kyu ranks**: - **Mukyu** (beginner’s rank, familiarization period) - **Rokkyu** - **Gokyu** - **Yonkyu** - **Sankyu** - **Nikyu** - **Ikkyu** Throughout their learning, practitioners are evaluated on their **behavior**, **technique**, and **motivation** during dedicated exams. If the required level is achieved, they are awarded a higher rank. A certain amount of time is required between exams. However, if a practitioner is particularly **talented** or **motivated**, they may progress to the next exam more quickly. It is important to note that these ranks are only valid within the aikido club that awards them. This means that the student may need to prove themselves again if changing dojo or federation. The exam process is determined by each instructor within their club. They set the **criteria** and **technical skills** to assess each student at different stages of learning. These criteria are, for the most part, similar to those of **federation exams** for dan promotion. This is to best prepare practitioners for the highest ranks. #### Dan Ranks There are **10 dan ranks**, but the 9th and 10th are extremely rare. Several years are required between each exam. Here are the names of the **first 8**: - **Shodan** - **Nidan** - **Sandan** - **Yondan** - **Godan** - **Rokudan** - **Nanadan** - **Hachidan** Dan ranks are not considered rewards but rather recognition of certain techniques and moral qualities acquired. In **France**, they are awarded after an **exam by a jury** composed of several **state-certified instructors**, whose decisions must be validated by the **National Superior Commission of Ranks**. From the 5th dan onward, promotion is based on a **specific seminar**. The practitioner’s involvement and commitment to aikido also become criteria for promotion. ### Aikido Weapons When practicing aikido, you may study the use of [**wooden weapons**](https://www.budo-fight.com/fr/catalogue/equipements/armes/armes-en-bois). There are **3 types of weapons** for this discipline: the **tanto**, the **jyo** (or **jo**), and the **bokken**. #### There are 4 types of exercises for training with these wooden weapons: - **Suburi**: solo exercise to develop weapon mastery and movement. - **Awase**: partner exercise to work on harmonization. - **Kata**: solo exercise, as in karate, consisting of codified sequences. - **Kumijo**: partner exercise, a codified fight where both opponents use the jo. - **Kumatachi**: same principle as Kumijo but with both opponents using the bokken. ![Aikido Equipment and Gear](https://www.budo-fight.com/storage/media/14463/conversions/aikido-store.webp)
